Dr. Matthew Alexander received his B.A. Cum Laude
degree from Harvard College in 1971 and his Master’s
and Doctoral degrees in Education and Psychology from
the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1982. Dr.
Alexander successfully completed a two year post-doctoral
fellowship in 1984 at Wayne State University and Grosse
Pointe Psychological Center with special concentration
in clinical, health and family psychology. His
training has given him a strong background in family
systems, psychodynamic and interpersonal approaches
to mental health.
Receiving his license (1053) to practice psychology
in the state of North Carolina in 1984, Dr. Alexander
has had an active clinical psychology practice since
that time. He is currently Director of the Division
of Behavioral Medicine for the Department of Family
Medicine at Carolinas Medical Center and is actively
engaged in teaching and supervising health care professionals
at that site. In 2003, Dr. Alexander was promoted to
Professor of Family Medicine at the UNC-Chapel Hill
School of Medicine. He is the first psychologist
in the state to have received this distinction.
Dr. Alexander has been published in multiple medical
journals and is the lead editor and author of
a book on the use of cinema as a teaching
tool. He is an engaging and successful public
speaker and has spoken nationally and regionally on
a wide variety of topics. He is frequently heard on
local radio and television as a psychological “expert”.
His many years of clinical experience and study allow
him to help clients achieve real change in their lives.
